8/3/09 – Google says branding does not affect SEO. Recent rumblings in the search engine optimization (SEO) community suggested that Google had changed its algorithms to increase the results of brands, but this week Google’s Matt Cutts downplayed the importance of branding in search.

A number of search engine optimization (SEO) experts concluded in recent weeks that a change from Google gave brands more favorable rankings in search. In a message uploaded on YouTube on Wednesday, Cutts acknowledged that tweaks had been made which would affect results.

However, Cutts said that the recent changes should not be considered an update and said Google does not put more weight on brands.

For companies looking to increase their search results and search engine optimization (SEO), Cutts said the techniques that worked two months ago, before the change, should still be effective.

“What you should be doing doesn’t change – try to make a great site, try to make a site that is so fantastic that you become known as an authority in your niche … those are the sort of sites – the experts – that we want to bring back,” he said. (Source: Industry News Article)

A system and method for automated search engine optimization (SEO) are disclosed. The automated SEO may analyze search query logs, or a search log database to determine popular concepts/units, which may be automatically utilized to optimize a site or page for search engine results. The site or page is edited based on the automated SEO. In particular, the search log database may provide a unit frequency list reflecting the popularity of various units. The more popular units that are related to the content of the page may be used in the automated SEO of the page. The unit frequency list may be compared with the existing units of a page, so that the more popular concepts within the page may be emphasized.

8/2/09Online marketers have little need to be worried about new trends doing away with the need for search engine optimisation, it has been suggested.

According to Michael Martinez of SEO Theory, those predicting the death of SEO due to the advent of personalised search, universal listings and social media have little to be concerned about.

Google is currently trialling Preferred Sites, which lets users select which websites they would like to see come up in their online searches.

He pointed out that particular websites are still likely to come up in personalised searches, even if it is not for the query that the webmaster was hoping for.

When it comes to universal search, marketers should get in on the act rather than trying to fight it, Mr Martinez added, stating that local map results require directory optimisation-type tactics, as do video search listings.

“As more SEOs invest their time and resources into building social media they find they are losing ground in the organic search results,” he said.

“Why? Because if you don’t increase your relevant search referral traffic every month, you’re not optimising for search.”

He concluded that SEO executives should ramp up their strategies to cope with new trends rather than believe that there will no longer be a need for SEO in the future

Caffeine incorporates changes not immediately visisble to web surfers, (except for the improved speed of returned listings) but its introduction has already seen the rankings of some businesses suffer, while others have pre-empted the changes to improve their search engine ranking by using social networking services, which are now included in Google’s real time search results.

Results listings from the main social network sites such as MySpace, Twitter, Yahoo! Answers and Facebook began appearing frequently in the top rankings of Google’s real time results in December of 2009 prompting SEO specialists to quickly learn the techniques that lead to those results.
